We are looking for people that understand how to operate the equipment at our Foothill College Recording Studio in Building 1100 to work as "Assistant Recording Studio Supervisors."

Job Requirements

Understand the equipment (Control surfaces, microphones, preamps, outboard gear etc.) and how to use it. This will include trouble shooting digital and analog audio equipment and Apple Mac computer technical problems. There is A LOT to learn at this studio! This is a constant, never-ending process for all of us. But we really need you to have a good, working understanding of how to operate the recording studio in order to be considered for this job.

If you are not yet qualified on this level, there are other opportunities for you to consider, and these could help prepare you for jobs like this in the future! (see below)

Pro Tools

In order to help run the recording studio at Foothill College, it's super important that you have good Pro Tools skills! The Pro Tools rigs at the Foothill College Recording Studios are quite complicated. We will help train you, but you need some previous Pro Tools experience.

Schedule

Available to work at least 8 hours per week, on Foothill College Campus. There might be opportunities to do some work remotely, over Zoom. But our main objective is to get help on Campus. It is also appreciated if you have some experience with social media marketing, graphic design, photography, web design, coding, computer science, music production and video production.

The current hours on Campus this Fall 2022 Quarter

Tues 11AM - 8PM
Wed 11AM - 8PM
Thur 12:30PM - 5:30PM
Fri 11AM - 8PM

The highest number of hours students can work per week is 19 hours per week

8-12 hours per week is a good number to aim for
4 hours per week is the absolute minimum
We are fairly flexible accommodating student's schedules. If you have to change or cancel a shift in a given week, that's no problem.

Your main job will be helping (supervise and support ) other students to run their recording sessions. When they get stuck with technical questions, we need you to help resolve them. There is also some general studio work involved, like tidying up after recording sessions, light cleaning and making sure all the equipment is properly put away after each recording session.

VOR - Volunteers of Record

If you are not quite ready, or fully qualified, for this position as Assistant Recording Studio Supervisor, we encourage you to consider applying as a VOR (Volunteer of Record). The VOR application process at Foothill College is very similar to the Student Employee application process. The applications are processed through the Human Resources Office. The main difference is a VOR is not paid. The benefits of being a VOR are:

  • You will receive direct training and hands-on experience
  • Assess to the recording studios and copies of some of the studio keys
  • Ability to directly book time in the studios for your own, personal recording projects
  • Directly connect to our staff and community of industry professional artists, producers and mentors
  • Build your resume with legit work experience at Foothill College
  • Help prepare you for paid work in the future
  • Once you have experience as a VOR, you will be next in line to be hired as an employee in the the future
  • Being a VOR is a huge, amazing learning experience!

The minimum number of hours required to work as a VOR are 4 hours per week.

Podcast and Video Production

In addition to the Student Employee Assistant Studio Supervisor position, there are opportunities to volunteer working with our team to help produce the Music Tech Student Podcast, Video Production and Live Streaming. This usually leads to paid work. And it is always good content for building our portfolios.

Music Tech Foundation

http://musictechfoundation.org/

Bruce Tambling has recently launched a 501(3)(c) nonprofit charitable organization, the Music Tech Foundation. This entity is not directly connected to, or affiliated with, Foothill College. But the overall mission statement is very much aligned with the Foothill College Music Technology Program. The Music Tech Foundation headquarters are in San Jose which include's Bruce Tambling's world class recording studio at Reynolds Circle. Many of our Foothill College Music Tech graduates and alumni (and some students) are working at the Music Tech Foundation. In addition to the paid work, we have some Internship, volunteer and work-exchange opportunities. This includes work and training at the San Jose facility and remote, virtual work/study. In many ways, the Music Tech Foundation is more advanced and better equipped than Foothill College. For example, Reynolds Circle Recording Studios caters to professional, paying clients. We see both organizations, Foothill College and the Music Tech Foundation as complimentary.

Reynolds Circle Studios currently has openings for A/V technicians to help us upgrade and rewire the audio/video equipment. The Music Tech Foundation is also looking to expand it's Administrative Management Division, Fund Raising and Video Editing Team.
